What does a fractional Chief Digital Officer actually do?

A fractional Chief Digital Officer is a senior digital leader who owns your whole digital strategy part-time, instead of as a full-time hire. I set the direction across your website, how buyers find you through search and AI, and the channels that bring them in, then I make sure every piece, and everyone working on it, actually delivers. Think of it like a fractional CTO or CMO, but focused on getting your company found and chosen.

What does owning your digital strategy actually include?

Everything that decides whether buyers find you and choose you sits under one roof, mine. I own four things and keep them pulling in the same direction.

Your website

The hub everything else points to. I decide what it says and does so it turns visitors into leads, not just something that looks good.

How buyers find you

I research who your buyers are and how they will try to find you.  Then I make sure you are present when and where they look.

The channels that bring people in

Social, email, video, etc.. I decide which ones earn their place and which are dead weight, so your plan only carries what works.

The vendors and agencies who do the work

I decide whether you need an agency, and if so, I pick the right one, handle the terms, and hold them accountable. You get one leader directing them, not one more vendor to manage.

How do I actually do it?

I start with what your data shows, not opinions. I look at how people actually move through your site, where they drop off, and how your competitors are positioned. Then I fix the message before I touch tactics, because the sharpest campaign fails if the site underneath it is unclear. From there I direct the work, the build, the content, the channels, and I stay in it until it launches and starts performing. We work in regular sessions, so the plan keeps pace as the landscape moves.

How is this different from an agency or a consultant?

I lead. I don’t just advise.

I am not a consultant who hands over a strategy and disappears. I become your digital leader and stay. The person who sets your direction is the same one doing the work with you. So when the next disruption comes, and it always does, your guide is already in the room, not a stranger you have to scramble to find.

I sit on your side of the table.

I am not a marketing agency, and I do not have an agency’s reason to recommend the work that serves the agency. I decide whether you even need an agency at all, and if so, I pick the right one, handle the terms, and hold them accountable. My recommendations answer to one thing, what is best for you. You do not get one more vendor to manage. You get the person who manages them for you.

I keep what works and drop what doesn’t.

I have led companies through every shift that rewrote how buyers find them, from the dot-com crash to mobile, to social, and now AI. That means I can tell which tactics still earn their place and which are dead weight, so your plan only carries what still works.

How is a fractional CDO different from a marketing agency?

An agency is a vendor you hire to do the work and then manage. A fractional Chief Digital Officer sits on your side of the table. I decide whether you need an agency, choose the right one, and hold it accountable, so you get a leader directing vendors for you, not one more vendor to manage.

How is this different from a consultant?

A consultant hands you a plan and leaves. I stay and lead. The person who sets the direction is the same one in the work with you until it ships, and still there when the next shift comes.

Do I need this if I already have a marketing manager or an agency?

Often yes. A marketing manager and an agency execute. Neither one sets senior digital strategy or holds the whole picture together. I lead the direction and make sure their work ties to real outcomes.

What parts of my digital strategy do you own?

All of it: your website, how buyers find you in search and AI, the channels that bring them in, and the vendors who execute. One person accountable for the whole picture.

Is AI all you do?

No. AI visibility is the newest part of a much larger role. I lead your whole digital strategy. AI is where I am out in front right now, not the whole of what I do.
